Buhari died of Blood Cancer, Leaves Behind a Terrible Legacy — Sowore

Human rights activist and pro-democracy advocate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the legacy of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away today at the age of 82.

Sowore’s sharp criticism stands in contrast to the outpouring of tributes from many political figures who have chosen to celebrate Buhari’s leadership and record in office.

The family of the late president confirmed his death in a statement, disclosing that he died this afternoon at a private clinic in London, United Kingdom, where he had been receiving treatment.

Buhari had battled a prolonged illness, although the specific details of his health condition were never officially made public throughout his years of visible frailty and recurring medical trips abroad.

Born on December 17, 1942, Muhammadu Buhari was a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army. He first emerged on Nigeria’s national stage as the country’s military Head of State, after toppling a civilian government in a coup on December 31, 1983. His military regime lasted until August 27, 1985, when he was overthrown by another military faction.

Three decades later, Buhari returned to national power through democratic elections, winning the presidency in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023.

His presidency was marked by polarizing assessments — while some praised his anti-corruption campaign, others condemned his administration’s record on human rights, economic management, and national security.

In his reaction to the announcement of Buhari’s death, Sowore alleged that the former president died of blood cancer, specifically leukemia, citing insider sources. He further revealed that Buhari had undergone stem cell therapy in the UK during the early stages of his illness.

Sowore said: “Former Nigerian President and ex-military dictator, Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly died in a UK clinic. Sources indicate the cause of death was blood cancer (leukemia). Buhari had stem cell therapy when he first became ill.

“His rule, whether as a military head or as a civilian president, inflicted deep wounds on Nigeria’s democracy. His legacy is one of repression, economic misery, insecurity, and religious bigotry.

Throughout his treatment, Nigeria was incurring a daily medical expense of £3,000 for his care in the UK until his death today.”

Sowore’s remarks have reignited public debates about Buhari’s contentious legacy, with many Nigerians reflecting on his impact on the nation’s democratic journey, economy, and social cohesion.

Wimbledon: Ruthless Sinner Ends Djokovic’s Dream, Sets Up Final with Alcaraz

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner produced a masterclass on Centre Court to dismantle Novak Djokovic in straight sets and book a place in his first Wimbledon final, where he will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The 23-year-old Italian overpowered the seven-time Wimbledon champion 6–3, 6–3, 6–4 in a stunning semifinal performance that ended Djokovic’s bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title. It also marked Sinner’s sixth consecutive win over the Serb—his first on grass—and avenged past defeats at SW19.

The result sets up a blockbuster rematch of last month’s French Open final, where Alcaraz came from two sets down to edge Sinner in five thrilling sets. This time, Sinner hopes to reverse the script.

First Sinner-Alcaraz Wimbledon final

“It’s a huge honour for me to share the court again with Carlos,” Sinner said after the match. “Hopefully it will be another great match like the last one. I don’t know if we can top it, but we’ll try. Hopefully, it’ll be enjoyable for everyone.”

Alcaraz Awaits as Rivalry Heats Up

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz booked his spot in Sunday’s final earlier on Friday, defeating American fifth seed Taylor Fritz 6–4, 5–7, 6–3, 7–6 (8–6) in the day’s first semi-final. The pair now set up a mouthwatering showdown, continuing a remarkable streak where either Sinner or Alcaraz has appeared in each of the last six Grand Slam finals.

20 Wimbledon wins in a row for Alcaraz

While Alcaraz seeks a third Wimbledon crown, Sinner will aim for his first major title on grass and his second Grand Slam this year, following his Australian Open triumph earlier this year.

Djokovic’s Future Uncertain After Defeat

For 38-year-old Novak Djokovic, the defeat was a bitter blow—and may be the clearest signal yet that time is catching up with the tennis legend. This was widely seen as his best chance to win a record-breaking 25th major, on his favourite surface where he has been near-invincible over the past decade.

Djokovic, who eliminated Sinner in both 2022 and 2023 at Wimbledon, was largely outclassed this time around. The Serb managed just six break points all match, converting only one, and required a medical timeout after the second set, possibly due to lingering effects of a slip in his quarterfinal against Flavio Cobolli.

Sinner, by contrast, looked sharp and composed throughout, with no visible signs of discomfort from the elbow injury that troubled him earlier in the tournament.

Sinner becomes the second player after Carlos Alcaraz to beat Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon since 2018

How the Match Unfolded

The opening set raced by as Sinner, serving impeccably, grabbed an early break and never looked back. He dictated from the baseline, chased down drop shots, and consistently outmaneuvered Djokovic in rallies.

In the second set, Sinner once again struck early, and although Centre Court rallied behind Djokovic, the Serb could find no way through Sinner’s consistent serve—failing to create a single break point in the first two sets.

Djokovic’s brief resurgence came in the third when he broke Sinner’s serve to take a 4–2 lead. But the Italian responded with a five-game streak, saving two break points and breaking back with a coolness that belied his age and experience.

Djokovic saved two match points to force Sinner to serve it out, but the Italian held firm on his second opportunity, sending a deafening signal that a new era in men’s tennis is fully underway.

Centre Court rises for Jannik

A Gracious Exit for the Champion

Centre Court gives Djokovic massive ovation

As Djokovic left the court, the crowd gave him a prolonged ovation, and he responded with a wave to all four corners of Centre Court—leaving many to wonder just how many more times they will witness the great Serb at this stage of Wimbledon.

BREAKING: Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olakulehin, Passes Away

2

The revered Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of the ancient city.

His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, The Olubadan of Ibadanland

The monarch, who was installed as the 43rd Olubadan, departed this world in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after commemorating his 90th birthday.

Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin ascended the prestigious throne of his forefathers in July 2024, following the passing of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.

The late Oba Balogun died on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81, paving the way for Oba Olakulehin’s ascension through the traditional succession hierarchy.

His emergence was in accordance with the city’s well-structured and rotational succession tradition, which ensures a peaceful and dignified transfer of leadership.

Oba Olakulehin officially received his staff of office from the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, during a grand installation ceremony that drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and well-wishers from across Nigeria.

Though his reign lasted only one year, Oba Olakulehin will be remembered for his calm leadership, wisdom, and commitment to the unity and progress of Ibadanland. His brief tenure was marked by efforts to preserve cultural heritage, promote peaceful coexistence, and foster community development.

His passing has thrown the entire Ibadan traditional council and the people of Oyo State into mourning, as tributes pour in for a monarch whose life was steeped in service, tradition, and dignity.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Euro 2025: Spain Begin Title Bid with Emphatic Win Over Mourning Portugal

World champions Spain made a powerful statement in their opening match of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, thrashing Portugal 5-0 in a commanding display in Bern, Switzerland.

The encounter was played in a sombre atmosphere, with both teams and fans paying tribute to Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash earlier on Thursday. A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off, while fans held up pictures and shirts bearing Jota’s name, and a large image of him in a Portugal shirt was displayed on the stadium’s big screen.

Despite the emotional weight of the occasion, Spain were relentless from the outset. Having already beaten Portugal 4-2 and 7-1 in the Nations League earlier this year, they were firm favourites — and needed just 88 seconds to assert their dominance.

Olga Carmona delivered a deep pass from the left, which Esther González brilliantly controlled on her shoulder before flicking a volley past Ines Pereira. Six minutes later, 18-year-old Vicky López doubled the lead, sliding in Arsenal winger Mariona Caldentey’s low cross.

Spain continued to pile on the pressure. A superb diagonal ball from Caldentey set up Alexia Putellas for the third, as the two-time Ballon d’Or winner skipped inside a challenge and calmly finished. González added her second and Spain’s fourth before half-time, reacting quickest to tap in the rebound after Claudia Pina’s cross struck the post.

Substitute Cristina Martín-Prieto completed the rout in stoppage time with a bullet header from a Salma Paralluelo cross.

A Historic Campaign Begins

Spain are aiming to become only the third nation to win both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the UEFA Women’s Championship — a feat previously achieved by Germany and Norway. Remarkably, Spain have never won the European Championship, with their best finish being a semi-final appearance in 1997.

This performance, however, firmly established them as tournament favourites, showcasing the depth and quality of their squad. Notably, Barcelona star Salma Paralluelo, who has finished third in Ballon d’Or voting for two consecutive years, started on the bench. Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, recovering from a recent bout of viral meningitis, was also among the substitutes and made a brief appearance in the 80th minute.

Standout Performers

Teenage sensation Vicky López was one of Spain’s brightest sparks, terrorising the Portuguese defence throughout. She not only scored Spain’s second goal but also completed five successful dribbles, created three chances, and had an 88.5% pass accuracy. López led all players with nine touches in the opposition box and combined seamlessly with Barcelona teammates Putellas and Pina.

Key Stats

Portugal remain without a win in their opening match at a major tournament (Women’s Euros or World Cup). Spain became the fourth team to score four or more goals in the first half of a Women’s Euro match, joining Norway (2005), France (2022), and England (2022). Spain’s 5-0 win is now their biggest victory in the finals of a European Championship, surpassing their 4-1 triumph over Finland at Euro 2022.

What’s Next?

Spain will face Belgium in their second Group B match on Monday, 7 July in Thun (17:00 BST), while Portugal will aim to bounce back against Italy later the same day in Geneva (20:00 BST).

In Thursday’s other Group B clash, Italy edged Belgium 1-0 thanks to a goal from Arianna Caruso, putting them in a strong early position in the group standings.

Spain’s electrifying start signals their intent — and it may take something special to stop them.

Tinubu’s 2 Term Certain, Don’t Contest Against Him ~Joe Igbokwe warns

3

The race for 2027 presidency appears to have started in earnest as politician are testing the water and microphone to create awareness and mobilisation.

Loyalists of president Bola Tinubu have started a subtle campaign for his reelection.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s opponents to abandon any thought of contesting for the presidency in 2027.Igbokwe said Tinubu would secure a second term and reposition Nigeria for the better.

Joe Igbokwe’s bold declaration comes as the 2027 presidential election is already generating buzz.

Igbokwe’s statement is likely intended to deter potential opponents.

Igbokwe’s warning is not without context, as he highlighted Tinubu’s impressive background, including his time as a senator and governor of Lagos State, as well as his role in forming key political parties.

However, not everyone is convinced, with some critics questioning Tinubu’s performance and suggesting that Igbokwe’s statement is more of a propaganda tactic .

In a bold statement that has ignited discussions across political circles, Joe Igbokwe, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Drainage and Water Resources, asserted that Tinubu’s position is solidified, making it futile for any opposition candidate to enter the race..

To Igbokwe President Tinubu is not just a leader; he is a visionary who has laid down the groundwork for sustainable growth. Contesting against him would be a waste of resources and time.

Igbokwe’s remarks come in the wake of ongoing debates about the political future of Nigeria and the potential candidates who may emerge from various parties. He emphasized that Tinubu’s policies and initiatives resonate with the electorate, making him a formidable candidate for a second term.

The people are beginning to see the positive impacts of his governance. It’s time for the opposition to recognize this reality,” he added.

Critics of Igbokwe’s statement argue that democracy thrives on competition and that the opposition must present alternative visions for the country’s future.

Political analysts are closely monitoring the situation, as Igbokwe’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among Tinubu’s supporters that the president is well-positioned to secure a second term.

Israel ambassador to US threatens future attacks on Hamas leaders in Qatar

0

The Israeli ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, has sparked controversy by suggesting that Israel could repeat its attempt to kill Hamas officials in Qatar if they survived the recent Israeli air strikes in Doha. “If we didn’t get them this time, we’ll get them the next time,” Leiter said in an interview with Fox News.

The Israeli envoy’s comments come after Israel launched air attacks in Doha targeting a Hamas delegation that was meeting to discuss US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire proposal.

The Israeli air strikes in Qatar have drawn widespread condemnation from countries around the world, including some of Israel’s Western allies.

Qatar described the strikes as “state terrorism” and called for a regional response against the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani accused Netanyahu of undermining regional stability and peace in pursuit of “narcissistic delusions” and personal gains.

“Working to violate the sovereignty of nations without any care must not be overlooked and must be confronted by all means,” he said.

US President Donald Trump, a staunch supporter of Israel, expressed misgivings with the attack but stopped short of publicly condemning it.

“Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a Sovereign Nation and close Ally of the United States, that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker Peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” he wrote in a social media post.

Qatar is a major non-NATO ally of the US, and it has helped mediate several international agreements involving Washington. The Gulf country also hosts one of the largest US military bases in the region.

Trump added that he spoke to Qatar’s emir and prime minister and “assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil”.

However, Leiter dismissed the US and international concerns, saying that Israel is changing the region “for the better” and working to “defeat Islamic extremism”. “Right now, we may be subject to a little bit of criticism. They’ll get over it,” he said. Israel receives billions of dollars in US military aid annually.

The Israeli air strikes in Qatar have raised doubts about the US “security guarantees” to its allies in the region.

The attack also highlights the complex and often contentious relationship between the US and Israel, with the two countries having differing views on how to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the US will respond to Israel’s actions and whether the two countries will be able to find common ground on this issue.

The Israeli strike on Qatar has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many countries calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The European Union’s chief, Ursula von der Leyen, has pledged action aimed at halting Israel’s war on Gaza, and the UN has expressed concern over the escalation of violence in the region.

As the international community continues to monitor the situation, it is clear that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains a pressing concern, with far-reaching implications for global security and stability.

The Israeli ambassador’s threat to launch future attacks on Hamas leaders in Qatar has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the US and other countries will respond to Israel’s actions and whether the two countries will be able to find common ground on this issue.

One thing is certain, however: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains a complex and contentious issue, with far-reaching implications for global security and stability.

EU Chief pledges action against Israel, bolsters support for Ukraine

0

Strasbourg, France – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that the European Union will implement new measures against Israel and increase support for Ukraine.

In her annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen condemned the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and outlined plans to cut support for Israel and impose sanctions.

The proposed package of measures includes sanctions on extremist Israeli ministers and settlers, suspension of bilateral support for Israel, and suspension of the EU’s association agreement with Israel, which grants preferential access to European markets.

“Man-made famine can never be a weapon of war. For the sake of the children, for the sake of humanity, this must stop,” von der Leyen declared, emphasizing the need for the EU to take responsibility for addressing the crisis.

However, the EU chief’s announcement has drawn criticism from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who accused von der Leyen of echoing Hamas propaganda and sending the “wrong message” that strengthens radical elements in the Middle East.

“The remarks made this morning by the President of the European Commission are regrettable. Some of them also echo the false propaganda of Hamas and its partners,” Saar wrote on social media.

“Once again, Europe is sending the wrong message, which strengthens Hamas and the radical axis in the Middle East.”

In addition to the measures against Israel, von der Leyen also outlined plans to increase support for Ukraine.

She proposed a summit to coordinate international efforts to secure the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia and suggested using frozen Russian assets to fund a “reparations loan” for Ukraine.

The EU has imposed 18 rounds of sanctions on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and provided nearly 140 billion euros in support to Ukraine.

Von der Leyen emphasized the need for the EU to accelerate efforts to phase out all purchases of Russian fossil fuels and to sanction the shadow oil shipping fleet used to circumvent such measures.

“Europe needs to do more,” she said, adding that while she would attempt to move the bloc in unison, EU member states also needed to take “our own responsibility” on the issue.

Despite the EU’s efforts, there are likely to be obstacles to implementing these measures.

Unanimous agreement is required to impose sanctions, and some member states, such as Hungary and Slovakia, remain dependent on Russian energy and have blocked previous actions. The 27-member bloc also remains divided over action regarding Israel’s war on Gaza.

Other member states, such as Spain and Ireland, have been calling for economic curbs and an arms embargo against Israel for some time.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said that the “double standards” demonstrated by the West over the wars in Ukraine and Gaza threaten to undermine its global standing.

The EU’s plans to impose measures against Israel and increase support for Ukraine reflect the bloc’s commitment to upholding human rights and international law.

However, the challenges and divisions within the EU highlight the complexity of navigating international relations and balancing competing interests.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the EU will address these challenges and work towards a more unified approach.

Soludo orders arrest of OCHA Brigade over Onitsha Main Market killings

Governor Chukwuma Soludo orders arrest of OCHA Brigade operatives after Onitsha shooting that killed four, including a pregnant woman, near Emeka Offor Plaza

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade (OCHA Brigade) who were allegedly responsible for the tragic shooting that occurred on Tuesday near Emeka Offor Plaza in Onitsha Main Market.

The incident, which caused panic in the bustling commercial hub, claimed the lives of at least four people, including a pregnant woman, and left several others injured.

In a swift response, Governor Soludo directed that the officers involved be apprehended without delay and handed over to the police for full-scale investigation and prosecution.

He further instructed that the injured victims be given urgent medical attention, with the government taking responsibility for their treatment.

The directive was contained in a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Law Mefor.

According to him, law enforcement agents acted promptly to restore calm and order to the affected area, and an official inquiry has already commenced to ascertain what transpired.

The statement reads in part: “We appreciate the swift intervention of the police in bringing the situation under control.

“An investigation has been launched, and the state government is committed to ensuring that those found culpable are prosecuted. Measures will also be put in place to prevent a recurrence of such a disturbing incident.”

Mefor went on to confirm the identity of one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Her body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy and preservation. He added that other victims are receiving medical treatment and are responding positively.

To ensure the safety of traders and residents, the Commissioner disclosed that the police have intensified patrols and monitoring around the Onitsha Main Market and adjoining areas.

He reassured the public that peace has been fully restored, though security agencies remain on high alert to forestall further breaches.

Governor Soludo emphasized that his administration will not tolerate any act of lawlessness or abuse of power by government agents, stressing that the primary duty of state operatives is to safeguard lives and property, not to endanger them.

Ipetumodu crisis deepens over Apetumodu stool

0

Princes clash in Ipetumodu over the Apetumodu stool after Oba Joseph Oloyede’s U.S. fraud conviction. Calls mount for Governor Adeleke’s intervention.

The ancient town of Ipetumodu in Osun State has been thrown into fresh tension following the conviction of its monarch, Oba Joseph Oloyede, in the United States, and the sharp disagreement among princes over the fate of the Apetumodu stool.

On Tuesday, princes from the two ruling houses — Aribile and Fagbemokun — gathered inside the palace for a meeting presided over by the Asalu of Ipetumodu, Chief Sunday Adedeji, the most senior surviving kingmaker.

The meeting, which commenced at about 4 p.m., initially went smoothly as issues of succession and the selection of new kingmakers were discussed.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke

However, events took a dramatic turn when some princes demanded that Chief Adedeji officially write to Governor Ademola Adeleke, urging him to declare the throne vacant in light of Oba Oloyede’s conviction abroad.

Oba Joseph Oloyede, the 27th Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, had been arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced by a U.S. federal court after being found guilty of conspiring to defraud the American government.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, the monarch and his co-conspirator fraudulently tapped into COVID-19 loan programmes under the CARES Act between April 2020 and February 2022.

On August 26, 2025, he was handed a sentence of more than four years in prison.

In addition to his imprisonment, the court ordered him to forfeit assets linked to the fraudulent scheme and to pay over $4.4 million in restitution to the U.S. government.

The news of his conviction has since unsettled Ipetumodu, sparking a series of debates and calls for clarity on the future of the stool.

During Tuesday’s deliberation, the matter of succession was raised, with some participants insisting that the throne had become vacant by virtue of the monarch’s conviction.

They argued that, as custodian of tradition, Chief Adedeji had a duty to notify the state government and trigger a formal process of succession.

However, Chief Adedeji rejected the request. Instead of endorsing the motion to write a letter to Governor Adeleke, he reportedly recused himself from any move that could escalate division.

His refusal led to a heated shouting match among the princes, causing the session to collapse around 6 p.m. without achieving any concrete resolution.

Prince Olaboye Ayoola, who spoke on behalf of the Aribile Ruling House after the meeting, expressed his displeasure at Adedeji’s stance.

According to him, the princes had agreed during discussions to elect two new kingmakers to replace the deceased ones and to formally notify the governor of the vacancy.

“But Chief Adedeji refused to sign on to that decision. He even announced that he was no longer interested in continuing as a kingmaker. That was when the meeting degenerated into chaos,” Ayoola said.

Contacted later, Chief Adedeji stood by his position but declined to provide extensive details.

His only remark was, “It is true. Peace has to reign first,” suggesting that unity and stability within the community were more important than hasty actions.

Since the conviction of Oba Oloyede, the two ruling houses of Ipetumodu have been split down the middle.

Members of Aribile — the house that produced the convicted monarch — are themselves divided.

While some maintain that the stool should remain with Aribile until Oba Oloyede completes his sentence, others argue that the house should quickly produce a replacement from among those who had previously vied for the throne.

Apetumodu stool crisis
Oba Joseph Oloyede

On the other hand, the Fagbemokun family insists that fairness and balance demand that the next Apetumodu should come from their side, since Aribile produced the monarch currently serving a prison sentence abroad.

The Osun State Government has so far adopted a cautious approach.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dosu Babatunde, confirmed that the administration was aware of the development but emphasized that official action would only be taken after the government obtains a Certified True Copy of the U.S. court judgment.

“The government will study the document before making any pronouncement,” Babatunde noted.

Security around Tuesday’s meeting was tight, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stationed in a patrol van outside the palace premises.

Their presence was said to have prevented the verbal exchange among the princes from escalating into a physical confrontation.

The uncertainty surrounding the Apetumodu stool has left the Ipetumodu community in a state of anxiety.

Residents, stakeholders, and traditional leaders are now looking to the state government for direction on the way forward.

Until then, the fate of the embattled monarch and the future of one of Osun State’s most prominent stools remain hanging in the balance.

Former Premier League referee David Coote charged over indecent video of a child

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged with making an indecent video of a child, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old, from Collingham, has been charged with a Category A offence — the most serious classification — in connection with a video file recovered by officers in February 2025.

He is currently on conditional bail and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 11.

Under UK law, “making an indecent image of a child” can include downloading, sharing, or saving images and videos of child abuse.

Coote’s charge comes just months after his dismissal by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December 2024.

He was sacked after a video circulated online appearing to show him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp.

The fallout deepened when, in August this year, the Football Association (FA) handed Coote an eight-week suspension relating to the Klopp footage.

His disciplinary record also included a second video that surfaced in November 2024, allegedly showing him snorting a white powder during Euro 2024, where he had served as an assistant VAR.

UEFA launched its own ethics investigation and subsequently banned Coote from officiating in European competitions until June 30, 2026.

Coote, who officiated more than 100 Premier League matches before his dismissal, now faces the most serious allegation of his career as the case proceeds in court.

Shalamar set to dazzle Nigerian fans at independence concert

0

Legendary American R&B group, Shalamar, is set to thrill Nigerian fans with a special live concert on October 4, 2025, at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The highly anticipated event, which coincides with Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, is expected to draw music lovers from across the country for what promises to be a nostalgic celebration of funk, soul, and timeless classics.

The concert, promoted by iCreate Africa in partnership with First Culture Limited, will see the Grammy-winning trio—Howard Hewett, Carolyn Griffey, and Jeffrey Daniel—bring their iconic sound back to Nigeria more than four decades after their historic performances in Lagos, Ibadan, and Ife in the early 1980s.

For fans, this event represents not just a concert but a rare opportunity to relive the golden era of R&B and funk music.

With evergreen hits such as A Night to Remember, Friends, and I Can Make You Feel Good, Shalamar’s Abuja performance is designed to bridge generations and evoke both nostalgia and excitement.

Speaking on the significance of the show, Bright Jaja, Chief Executive Officer of iCreate Africa, described Shalamar’s decision to include Nigeria in their global tour as a “major cultural moment.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome Shalamar to Abuja this Independence Weekend. Their decision to perform in Nigeria is not just an honour—it’s a long-overdue gift to a vibrant community of music lovers who have carried their legacy for decades,” Jaja said.

He added that the concert will particularly appeal to mature audiences who rarely find events curated specifically for their tastes.

Tickets are already available at outlets including Jabi Boat Club, El-Amin International School, House 43, and Istanbul Restaurant at Jabi Mall.

Similarly, Tunde Babalola, Creative Director of First Culture, said the event is about more than just music.

“This isn’t just a concert; it’s a gift to all generations. It’s a bridge between the past and the present, curated to evoke thrills, nostalgia, and goosebumps,” he noted.

In a video message to fans, group members expressed excitement about returning to Nigeria.

Jeffrey Daniel, who famously pioneered the “backslide” dance move later popularised by Michael Jackson as the moonwalk, said Nigerians should prepare for an unforgettable night.

“This show will truly be a night to remember,” Daniel declared.

Shalamar’s influence on global music extends beyond their soulful harmonies to their pioneering role in dance and pop culture.

Their introduction of body-popping to the UK in the late 1970s and 1980s left a lasting mark on the international music scene.

Formed in the late 1970s, Shalamar rose to international fame with a string of chart-topping hits and sold over 25 million records worldwide before the classic lineup split in the mid-1980s.

Despite lineup changes over the years, their music continues to resonate across generations, securing their place as one of the most influential R&B groups of all time.

Some of their best-loved tracks include Make That Move, Sweeter As the Days Go By, There It Is, and I Owe You One. Their songs, often played at weddings, parties, and retro events, remain staples for lovers of soul and funk.

This concert is not Shalamar’s first Nigerian appearance.

In January 1982, they performed at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos before embarking on university tours in Lagos, Ibadan, and Ife.

Their return in 2025 aligns with Nigeria’s landmark 65th Independence Anniversary, making the show both a cultural and symbolic celebration of unity through music.

For Abuja residents and visitors, the event is expected to boost the city’s entertainment economy, with hotels, restaurants, and nightlife spots preparing for increased patronage.

Tourism experts also note that concerts of this magnitude contribute to Nigeria’s positioning as a key destination for global music acts.

As Nigeria celebrates 65 years of independence, Shalamar’s live performance will remind audiences of the power of music to connect generations and cultures.

Whether for long-time fans of their 1980s classics or younger audiences discovering their sound for the first time, the concert promises an unforgettable evening.

With the combination of nostalgia, soul-stirring music, and the symbolic timing of Independence Day, October 4 in Abuja is shaping up to be a milestone night in Nigeria’s entertainment calendar.

Kenyan lawyer killed in drive-by shooting in Nairobi

0

Nairobi, Kenya– A respected Kenyan lawyer, Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting on a busy street in Nairobi.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a gunman on a motorcycle pulled alongside Mbobu’s vehicle and opened fire. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, and the police are currently investigating the matter.

Mbobu, a former head of a political parties’ dispute tribunal, was driving home when the attack took place near the Lang’ata-Magadi road junction.

A gruesome video shared online shows the lawyer’s bloodied body slouched over the steering wheel of his car. The police have appealed to the public to remain calm and report any information that can help the case.

“We are determined to provide the justice that [Mr. Mbobu] and his loved ones deserve,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said in a statement.

The Law Society of Kenya has described the killing as “abhorrent” and called for swift and conclusive action to be taken. “Too often, advocates have been victimized and targeted for the work that they do,” LSK president Faith Odhiambo said in a statement.

The society expressed concern over threats faced by lawyers, adding that the killing had “all markings of a predetermined assassination”.

Mbobu was a law lecturer at the University of Nairobi and was known for his influential legal writing and mentoring students into successful lawyers.

He was a previous chairman of the Political Parties’ Dispute Tribunal and the Business Rent Premises Tribunal, which would have put him at the heart of resolving contentious political and commercial disputes.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who was taught by Mbobu at university, described him as a “distinguished advocate, an outstanding law scholar, and a dedicated public servant”.

The police are investigating the shooting, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has called on the public to provide any information that can help the case.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said the “cold-blooded killing” of Mr. Mbobu had “left us all devastated and in deep shock”. “We expect the police to carry out speedy and thorough investigations to unearth the reason and culprits behind this heinous crime and ensure justice is served,” he said.

The killing of Mbobu bears similarities to the death of Charles Ong’ondo Were, a member of parliament who was shot dead in similar circumstances in April.

Police then said several suspects had been arrested following what appeared to be a “targeted and predetermined” assassination. Some of the suspects have since been charged.

The killing of Mathew Kyalo Mbobu has sent shockwaves across Kenya, with many calling for justice and an end to the violence that has plagued the country.

As the investigation continues, the legal fraternity and the public are waiting with bated breath for answers and for those responsible to be brought to book.

The incident highlights the need for improved security measures and a more effective justice system to protect citizens, particularly those in high-profile positions.

Hong Kong lawmakers reject same-sex partnerships bill

Hong Kong lawmakers have dealt a significant blow to the city’s LGBTQ community by rejecting a bill that would have granted limited rights to same-sex couples.

The proposed legislation, which aimed to recognize some rights for couples married overseas, was voted down by 71 of the 89-member Legislative Council.

This decision marks a rare split between the legislature and the Hong Kong government, which had backed the bill.

The bill was introduced to comply with a 2023 court ruling that ordered the government to create an alternative framework to recognize unions between members of the same sex.

Despite the city’s growing support for the LGBTQ community, with polls suggesting 60% of respondents in favor of same-sex marriage, the lawmakers rejected the bill.

The proposed legislation would have allowed same-sex couples who were married or had civil unions overseas to register their relationships and enjoy some rights, including hospital visits and making medical decisions for a spouse.

LGBTQ rights activist Jimmy Sham expressed his disappointment and frustration over the rejection of the bill. “It’s deeply regrettable that the bill did not pass, and the government’s inability to protect same-sex couples’ rights would remain an open wound,” he said.

Sham has been a long-time advocate for LGBTQ rights and initiated a legal challenge to legalize same-sex marriage.

Amnesty International also criticized the rejection, stating that it showed an “alarming disdain” for LGBTQ rights and urged the Hong Kong authorities to introduce a new and revised bill.

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, John Lee, had backed the bill and warned that rejection would violate Hong Kong’s rule of law and bring about “serious consequences.”

The government’s proposal drew criticism from both LGBTQ activists, who viewed it as insufficient, and members of the LegCo, who said it went against traditional family values and paved the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

The rejection of the bill means the government will have to go back to the drawing board, with little time to meet its October 27 deadline.

This decision highlights the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Hong Kong, despite the city’s growing reputation as becoming gay-friendly. The estimated 6% of the adult population who identify as LGBTQ continue to face limited rights and recognition.

Polls suggest that there is rising support for same-sex marriages among the Hong Kong public. A survey in 2023 found 60% of respondents in favor of same-sex marriage, compared to 38% a decade ago.

This growing support is also reflected in the city’s hosting of the Gay Games in 2023, marking the first time the competition was held in Asia.

The rejection of the same-sex partnerships bill in Hong Kong has sparked widespread criticism and disappointment among the LGBTQ community and human rights groups.

As the government considers its next steps, the debate over LGBTQ rights and recognition continues to unfold. The city’s lawmakers’ decision has raised questions about the future of LGBTQ rights in Hong Kong and the potential consequences of not meeting the court’s deadline.

NSCDC arrests man for ₦9m fraud, impersonation

The NSCDC in Adamawa has arrested 28-year-old Bless Johnson for defrauding nine residents of over ₦9m through fake job offers, travel aid, and political promises.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Adamawa State Command, has apprehended a suspected fraudster accused of duping several residents of the state of more than ₦9 million through various deceptive schemes.

The suspect, identified as Bless Johnson, a 28-year-old, was arrested in Timbokum Village, Ganye Local Government Area, after weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance.

His arrest was carried out on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following reports lodged by victims at the NSCDC Divisional Office in Mubi.

Confirming the development, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Nyako Baba, disclosed in a statement that Johnson had been impersonating influential personalities and exploiting the desperation of unsuspecting citizens.

He allegedly offered false assurances of securing political appointments, providing lucrative job placements, and facilitating international travel arrangements for those who paid him.

“Acting on credible intelligence and coordinated efforts, our operatives tracked and arrested Johnson in Ganye LGA,” Baba explained.

“Preliminary investigations show that he defrauded no fewer than nine individuals, collecting several millions of naira through deceitful promises that never materialised.”

Investigations further revealed that the suspect persuaded his victims to transfer funds directly into his personal bank account, disguising the payments as processing fees and service charges for the opportunities he claimed to provide.

While in custody, Johnson reportedly refunded ₦1,120,000 to a few victims, but the majority of the money remains unreturned.

The NSCDC spokesperson noted that Johnson’s modus operandi involved collecting contacts of high-profile personalities, which he cleverly used to mislead people into believing that he had access to corridors of power and could influence appointments or favours.

This strategy, according to the Corps, gave his fraudulent offers an air of legitimacy and emboldened him to target more victims.

Baba assured the public that the Corps is committed to protecting citizens from criminals who prey on vulnerable individuals through scams and fraudulent dealings.

He added that the suspect would be formally charged to court for impersonation and obtaining money by false pretence, offences which attract severe penalties under Nigerian law.

The NSCDC, therefore, urged members of the public to remain vigilant, verify information before making payments to anyone, and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies to avoid falling victim to similar fraudulent schemes.

Woman acquitted after 61 years for defending herself against sexual assault

In a groundbreaking decision, a South Korean court has acquitted a 79-year-old woman, Choi Mal-ja, of charges related to biting off the tongue of her attacker during a sexual assault 61 years ago.

The Busan District Court ruled that Choi’s actions were recognized as self-defense, overturning her 1964 conviction.

Choi, who was just 18 years old at the time of the incident, had been sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, for causing grievous bodily harm to her attacker.

In contrast, her attacker received a lighter sentence of six months in prison, suspended for two years, for trespassing and intimidation, but was never charged with attempted rape.

This disparity in sentencing highlights the deep-seated gender biases and societal perceptions that have long influenced the South Korean justice system.

On May 6, 1964, Choi was attacked by a 21-year-old man in the southern town of Gimhae.

The attacker pinned her to the ground, repeatedly forcing his tongue into her mouth, and at one point, blocked her nose to stop her from breathing.

Choi managed to break free by biting off about 1.5 centimeters of his tongue. Despite her ordeal, Choi was treated as the perpetrator, while her attacker was seen as the victim.

Choi’s path to exoneration has been arduous and challenging. Inspired by the global #MeToo movement, she reached out to advocacy groups in 2018 and spent about two years gathering evidence before filing a petition for a retrial.

Lower courts initially rejected her petition, citing a lack of evidence to support her claims of self-defense. However, in December 2024, the Supreme Court granted her application to reopen the case.

The Busan District Court’s ruling marks a significant shift in how the South Korean justice system approaches cases of sexual violence.

Prosecutors apologized to Choi during the retrial, acknowledging that her actions were legitimate self-defense. The court’s decision is seen as a major victory for women’s rights and a step towards creating a more just and equitable society.

“Thanks to Choi Mal-ja’s relentless fight without ever giving up, the prosecution and judiciary had the opportunity to correct that error today,” said Kim Soo-jung, Choi’s lawyer. Choi plans to file a civil lawsuit against the state to seek compensation for the injustices she suffered.

The Korea Women’s Hotline, one of the groups that supported Choi in her campaign, believes that the verdict will pave the way to justice for victims of sexual violence.

“Going forward, women’s defensive acts will be understood as legitimate. I expect this will mean fewer women will face unjust suffering,” says Song Ran-hee, who leads the group.

“At the very least, it will send a message to victims. Even if the process you are going through now is painful and unjust, it says: ‘Your voice matters. Speak out,'” Ms. Song added.

Choi’s acquittal is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of standing up against injustice.

Her story serves as a beacon of hope for countless women who have suffered in silence, and it underscores the need for continued efforts to create a society that values and protects the rights of all individuals.
