As President Bola Tinubu marks his second year in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has offered a notable endorsement of the administration’s efforts while urging Nigerians to keep their expectations realistic amid ongoing reforms.

In a statement released by Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the former president congratulated President Tinubu on the mid-term milestone, emphasizing the importance of patience and unity in supporting the government’s agenda.

According to Buhari, meaningful reforms take time to deliver results. He cautioned that “necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics,” warning against allowing political distractions to derail Nigeria’s progress.

The statement underlined that challenges such as poverty and inflation—which have disproportionately affected Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations—require collective efforts. Buhari stressed that tackling these economic issues cannot rest solely on the government’s shoulders.

“The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” Buhari advised, calling for a collaborative approach to national development.

Since taking office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu has rolled out his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” a comprehensive reform program aimed at stabilizing the economy and promoting sustainable growth. Key policy moves include the removal of petrol subsidies, the liberalization of the Nigerian naira exchange rate, and the full repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan—actions that have drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians.

While these reforms have been credited with improving Nigeria’s fiscal position, they have also contributed to a sharp rise in the cost of living, sparking widespread concern and debate.

Despite these economic pressures, Buhari urged Nigerians to remain optimistic and confident about the future, reminding citizens that reforms of this scale “would achieve success gradually, not overnight.”

The statement comes at a time of significant political developments. On May 23, 2025, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) officially endorsed President Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election. This move has consolidated Tinubu’s position within the party amid defections from opposition members, signaling a strengthening of his political base.

Buhari’s message of support aligns with the APC’s efforts to project unity and continuity ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Beyond political endorsements, Buhari highlighted the critical role of citizens and the private sector in driving Nigeria’s economic recovery. He urged all Nigerians to actively participate in the country’s development by supporting government policies and initiatives.

“The expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” Buhari said. He encouraged a spirit of collaboration, calling on everyone to contribute to building a prosperous Nigeria.

In closing, Buhari extended heartfelt congratulations to President Tinubu, wishing him wisdom and care as he continues to lead the nation.

“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care,” the former president concluded.

As Nigeria navigates complex economic and political challenges, Buhari’s endorsement of Tinubu’s administration signals a critical moment for national unity and patience. With reforms underway and a collective call for responsibility, Nigerians are encouraged to maintain hope while managing expectations realistically.
