Colombian pop star Shakira has cancelled her upcoming concert in Washington DC, citing “complications” with the stage at her previous show in Boston, which was also called off. The concert, scheduled as part of WorldPride, one of the largest LGBTQ+ festivals globally, had fans disappointed, with some expressing their frustration on social media.
“I have been counting the days, excited to be reunited with my fans in both Washington and Boston,” Shakira said in a statement, adding, “I promise that I will do everything in my power to be with you as soon as I can.” She expressed her disappointment, stating she was “devastated” that the shows “were just not possible this time”.
The cancellation resulted from unforeseen circumstances affecting Shakira and other artists in Boston, making it impossible for her full tour production to be transported to Washington, D.C. in time for the scheduled performance. Nationals Park, the venue where the concert was set to take place, released a statement saying, “Despite every effort, it was not possible for the concert to take place as planned.” The venue promised automatic refunds for ticketholders.
The previous performance in Boston’s Fenway Park stadium was cancelled shortly before Shakira was due to take the stage on May 29. Performances by country singers Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn on May 30 were also cancelled due to safety issues with the stage. According to the BBC’s US partner CBS News, “structural elements were identified as not being up to standard” during a routine pre-show check.
Shakira is currently touring stadiums across North America as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour, supporting her 12th studio album. She is due to perform in Atlanta on June 2. Fans have expressed support for the singer, with one user writing, “She doesn’t deserve this horrible situation”. Others, however, were disappointed, having travelled specifically for the concert: “Flew in from LA for this. I’m experiencing a second cancellation of this tour… Rather disappointing”.
