The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday to allow the people of the state to mourn and show solidarity with the families of those who lost their lives in a devastating road accident. The accident claimed 22 lives and left several others with serious injuries.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, when a bus carrying members of Kano State’s contingent to the National Sports Festival in Ogun State plunged off a bridge just a few kilometres from Kano, as the team was returning home.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the state government expressed its profound sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

The statement reads in part: “On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident that occurred to the brave Kano team members on their way back home along the Kano–Zaria expressway.”

The delegation involved in the accident consisted of athletes, coaches, and officials who had represented Kano State at the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

Governor Yusuf, who is currently on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj operations, described the loss as a dark and painful moment in the history of the state. He called for unity, compassion, and collective prayers during this time of grief.

“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.

On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief,” the governor stated.

In his message, Governor Yusuf assured that the state government is making every effort to support the affected families and ensure that those injured receive proper medical care.

To honour the memory of the departed and provide space for reflection, the governor directed that Monday, June 2, be observed as a public holiday across Kano State. The public is encouraged to use the day for prayers and to express their support for the grieving families.

Furthermore, the statement appealed to religious leaders and the Muslim community within and beyond Kano to offer prayers for the souls of the departed and ask for strength and comfort for their families.
