The aid crisis in Gaza has taken a dire turn as Israeli forces have killed at least 27 Palestinians and injured 90 others near an aid distribution site in Rafah. This incident marks the third consecutive day of violence around the aid hub, with reports indicating chaos and random firing by Israeli forces. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 100 aid seekers have been killed since the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began operating on May 27.

Chaos and Violence at Aid Distribution Sites

Witnesses describe the scene as “indiscriminate” and “chaotic,” with gunfire coming from all directions. Rasha al-Nahal, a witness, recounted that she saw over a dozen people dead and several wounded on the road. When she finally reached the distribution hub, there was no aid, and Israeli troops fired at them as they were returning. Another witness, Neima al-Aaraj, stated, “I won’t return. Either way, we will die.”

International Response and Concerns

The United Nations has demanded an independent investigation into the repeated mass shootings of aid seekers in Gaza. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that it’s unacceptable for Palestinians to risk their lives for food and called for perpetrators to be held accountable. The International Committee of the Red Cross has also reported taking in 184 wounded people to its field hospital in Rafah, with 19 dead on arrival and eight others dying later from their wounds.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The Gaza aid crisis has sparked widespread concern, with many highlighting the need for a more humane approach to aid distribution. The US-backed aid distribution system in Gaza has been criticized as “inhumane” by charity chiefs. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the international community is urging for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
