The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a devastating toll on journalists and media workers, with at least 154 reported killed since the start of the war. The International Federation of Journalists and the Committee to Protect Journalists have documented these deaths, highlighting the extreme risks faced by journalists in the region.

The deadliest incidents include:

  • Journalists Killed in Israeli Airstrikes:
    • Hossam Shabat, a contributor to Al Jazeera Mubasher, killed in an Israeli airstrike on his car in Jabalia refugee camp.
    • Mohammed Mansour, a journalist from Palestine Today, killed when his apartment in Khan Yunis was hit.
    • Maysara Salah, a journalist who died after being injured near Awni Al-Harthani School in northern Gaza.
  • Other Notable Incidents:
    • Ismail Baddah, a Palestinian journalist killed in an Israeli air strike on al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City on June 5, 2025.
    • Ibrahim Lafi, editor-in-chief of local news agency Shams, killed near Beit Hanoun checkpoint.
    • Mohammad Jarghoun, working for Smart Media, killed while covering the fight between Hamas and the Israeli army near Rafah.

The international community has expressed concern over the targeting of journalists, with the UN Secretary-General stating that the number of journalists killed in the conflict is deeply troubling. The Committee to Protect Journalists has also emphasized that the intentional targeting of journalists is a war crime.

Reports have emerged suggesting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved arming a Palestinian gang opposed to Hamas without cabinet knowledge. While Netanyahu’s office neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, the incident raises questions about the Israeli government’s strategy in Gaza and its willingness to engage with various Palestinian factions.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The international community must act swiftly to address the humanitarian crisis and push for a lasting ceasefire. As the conflict continues to escalate, it’s crucial to prioritize the protection of civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid to those in need.
