The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Club Owners’ Forum, in collaboration with the League Management, held a pivotal expanded meeting on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 in Abuja.

The gathering, attended by NPFL club chairmen and league leadership, addressed critical issues impacting Nigerian football, culminating in a series of resolutions aimed at advancing the sport’s growth and professionalism.

The Forum unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), led by Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, for its dedication to football development nationwide.

Similarly, the leadership of the NPFL, under Chairman Chief Gbenga Elegbeleye and Chief Operating Officer Prince Davidson Owumi, received commendations and a vote of confidence for their professionalism and tireless efforts in managing the league. The Forum also expressed satisfaction with the stewardship of its own leadership, headed by Chief (Dr.) Okey Kpalukwu, endorsing their strategic direction.

A comprehensive review of the 2024/2025 NPFL season highlighted its success, with the Forum describing it as one of the most organized in recent history, marked by improved matchday operations, strict adherence to fixtures, and enhanced efficiency.

The meeting also approved amendments to the NPFL Framework and Rules, including enhanced life and injury insurance for players and officials, as well as improved post-match conference protocols to boost media engagement and professionalism.

The Forum extended congratulations to Remo Stars FC for clinching the 2024/2025 NPFL title and commended Rivers United and Abia Warriors for securing Nigeria’s slots in the CAF Interclub Competitions.

Clubs were urged to prepare early for successful continental campaigns to elevate Nigerian football’s global image. Additionally, the Super Eagles’ triumph at the Unity Cup Tournament in London was celebrated as a boost to Nigeria’s football reputation.

Addressing economic challenges, the Forum encouraged clubs to explore alternative revenue streams through sponsorships, merchandising, and media rights to ensure financial sustainability. The proposed 2025/2026 NPFL season calendar was received and discussed, with a call for stakeholders to align for seamless implementation.

The Forum also praised the National Sports Commission, led by Mallam Shehu Dikko, for its support in advancing sports, particularly football. Private club owners and state governors were recognized for their commitment despite economic difficulties. Emphasizing safety, the Forum urged State Football Associations to enhance security at match venues, noting their primary responsibility for matchday safety.

The meeting concluded with a unified commitment to fostering discipline, transparency, and innovation to ensure the NPFL’s growth and global competitiveness. Stakeholders were encouraged to uphold these values to advance Nigerian football.
