Portugal clinched their second UEFA Nations League title in a dramatic penalty shootout victory over neighbors Spain, settling a pulsating final at the Allianz Arena.

The match, which ended 2-2 after normal time, showcased high-octane football and culminated in a tense shootout where Portugal’s composure prevailed.

The turning point came when goalkeeper Diogo Costa denied Spain’s Alvaro Morata from the penalty spot, paving the way for Ruben Neves to slot home the decisive kick.

Portugal’s captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, overcome with emotion, was seen sobbing tears of joy on the sidelines after being substituted before extra time. His pivotal contribution in regulation time ensured Portugal remained in contention for the trophy.

Spain, winners of the 2023 Nations League, struck first in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to poke the ball home. Portugal responded swiftly, with Nuno Mendes unleashing a low, angled strike past Unai Simon just five minutes later to level the score. Spain regained the lead before halftime when Mikel Oyarzabal, the hero of last summer’s European Championship final, found the net.

Ronaldo, Portugal’s talisman, equalized in the 61st minute, shrugging off Marc Cucurella to volley home a deflected cross from Mendes. Despite both teams creating chances in extra time, neither could find a winner, leading to the shootout.

Portugal’s Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Nuno Mendes all converted their penalties with precision, while Morata’s tame effort was easily stopped by Costa.

With Neves’ final strike, Portugal became the first nation to claim two Nations League titles, denying Spain the same honor.

The victory sparked wild celebrations among Portuguese fans, cementing their team’s place in football history.
