A twin-engine plane used for skydiving expeditions crashed at the Tullahoma Regional Airport in Tennessee on Sunday, June 8, 2025, with 20 passengers and crew members on board. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in the incident. According to city spokesman Lyle Russell, the plane, a DeHaviland DH-6 Twin Otter, went down at around 12:30 pm local time.
Russell stated, “There were no casualties,” adding that three people were sent for medical treatment via helicopter and one person was transported to local hospitals with more serious injuries by ground transport. Additionally, several minor injuries were treated by first responders at the scene. Russell confirmed that “no ground facilities or airport facilities were damaged and there were no injuries reported from the ground”.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the crash, while the Tennessee Highway Patrol assisted police at the scene. Images shared on social media by the highway patrol showed significant damage to the plane, with its nose buried in the grass and its tail and wing broken off.
This incident comes on the heels of other recent plane crashes in Tennessee. In March, a single-engine aircraft crashed near Interstate 40 in Nashville, killing five people on board. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are working together to determine the causes of these incidents.
The skydiving plane crash occurred near Smyrna Airport in Rutherford County, Tennessee. According to eyewitnesses, the plane went down shortly after taking off, sparking a massive response from emergency services.
Fortunately, all 20 people on board were able to exit the aircraft, although several sustained injuries. The severity of these injuries is not yet clear, but reports indicate that some individuals suffered serious harm.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. The investigation will likely take several months to complete and will aim to determine the factors that contributed to the accident.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of skydiving operations in the area. While skydiving is considered a relatively safe sport when conducted properly, accidents can and do occur. The investigation will help to determine whether any safety protocols were breached and whether any measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
