The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has solidified its leadership structure with the successful completion of the South East and North West zonal elections, held on Wednesday at the Media Centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The elections, a significant step in strengthening the AFN’s Executive Board, were overseen by Honourable Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and marked by transparency and credibility.

In the South East zone, Mr. Festus Okorie emerged victorious, securing a unanimous 4–0 vote to claim the regional ticket. Meanwhile, in the North West, Abubakar Ladan Zurmi triumphed with a decisive 5–1 victory over Honourable Sunday Adeleye of Kaduna State. The outcomes reflect the AFN’s commitment to a democratic and inclusive process as it prepares for the next four years of leadership.

Honourable Olopade praised the electoral process, emphasizing its importance to the future of Nigerian athletics. “Athletics is a cornerstone of our sports ecosystem, and transparent elections lay the foundation for success in the coming years.”

Olopade also called for unity within the athletics community, urging stakeholders to prioritize collaboration and reconciliation. “While not everyone can serve on the board simultaneously, we are all part of the same sports family, working toward the growth of Nigerian sports,” he said. “I appeal to all stakeholders to foster peace and de-escalate tensions, particularly around election matters.”

The successful elections signal a promising future for the AFN as it works to elevate Nigeria’s standing in global athletics. With a fortified leadership, the federation is poised to drive progress and unity in the sport.
