The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will launch its 2025/2026 season on Friday, August 22, 2025, and conclude on Sunday, May 24, 2026, according to an announcement by NPFL Chairman and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Second Vice President, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye.

The declaration, made during a press briefing at the NFF headquarters in Abuja on Friday, signals a strategic move to align Nigeria’s domestic football calendar with continental and international competitions.

Elegbeleye emphasized that the carefully chosen dates reflect the NFF’s commitment to fostering consistency in the league’s schedule, enhancing club preparedness for both domestic and African campaigns, and elevating the NPFL’s profile across the continent.

“We have fixed August 22, 2025, as the kickoff date for the new NPFL season, and it will run through to May 24, 2026,” Elegbeleye stated. “This is part of our broader plan to stabilize the calendar, allowing clubs sufficient time for preseason preparations and rest.”

The upcoming season will maintain the full 20-club format, building on the success of the 2024/2025 campaign, which saw Remo Stars clinch the title in May. Elegbeleye noted that the league’s fixtures, broadcast arrangements, matchday schedules, and player registration deadlines will be released in the coming weeks, providing clarity for clubs, players, broadcasters, and fans.

The announcement has generated excitement among stakeholders, who are eager for a competitive and well-organized season.

This development marks a pivotal moment for Nigerian football, as the NPFL continues to push for improved organization, commercial growth, and global recognition.

With a clear timeline now in place, clubs can focus on strengthening their squads and strategies, while fans anticipate another thrilling chapter in the nation’s premier football competition.
