The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has sent a clear message to all clubs ahead of the 2025/26 season, set to commence on August 22: stadiums lacking functional LED floodlights and reliable backup power will not be permitted to host home matches.

This directive, outlined in a stern memo from NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, underscores the league’s commitment to elevating professional standards and ensuring seamless matchday operations.

In the memo, circulated to the NPFL Board, management, staff, and all clubs, Owumi emphasized that standard LED floodlights and dependable backup power are non-negotiable requirements. These facilities are deemed essential for hosting games, particularly evening matches, and for maintaining consistency in the face of Nigeria’s often unpredictable power supply.

The directive comes as part of the NPFL’s broader push to enhance the quality of infrastructure across its member clubs, ensuring a professional and fan-friendly experience.

The NPFL has made it clear that routine stadium inspections will be conducted before the season begins, and any club failing to meet these standards will be barred from using their home venues.

Owumi urged clubs to act swiftly, warning that no exceptions will be granted once the season kicks off. “Clubs must prioritize these upgrades to avoid disruptions,” he stated, highlighting the league’s zero-tolerance stance on non-compliance.

This announcement has sparked discussions among club owners, with some expressing concerns over the costs of installing or upgrading floodlights and power systems.

However, the NPFL insists that these measures are critical for aligning the league with global standards. As the 2025/26 season approaches, all eyes will be on the clubs to see if they can meet the deadline and ensure their stadiums are ready for action.
