The Anambra State Government has approved a total of ₦9.72 billion for the implementation of critical infrastructure and development projects across the state. This decision was reached during the 11th session of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), held in Awka.

While addressing the press after the meeting, the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that the approved funds will be used for various initiatives, including erosion and flood control, road construction, rehabilitation of public infrastructure, and education sector development.

Among the major projects approved is the construction of access roads within the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, which has been allocated ₦2.10 billion, as well as the construction of a 2.28-kilometre Umunze–Umuchu bypass, including erosion and flood mitigation works, estimated at ₦3.5 billion.

In the education sector, the government has earmarked ₦718.68 million for the reconstruction and renovation of deteriorating buildings at Nwafor Orizu College of Education. Furthermore, ₦2.65 billion was approved for the construction of 3.9-kilometre access roads within the Uli Campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

Additional infrastructure approvals include ₦528.6 million for the completion of a Country Club located within the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex, ₦97.31 million for the rehabilitation of Nya Ranch Road, which lies beside the Old Government House in Awka, and ₦65.68 million for additional construction works at the Specialist Hospital in Fegge.

To improve road safety and signage across the state, the council also approved ₦55.18 million for the installation of road signs, rumble strips, flashing caution lights, and thermoplastic speed bumps.

In addition to infrastructural developments, the Council announced the commencement of the Anambra Rebirth Programme, a social reorientation initiative aimed at restoring core Igbo values, including integrity, hard work, and discipline. According to Dr. Mefor, this programme seeks to influence behavioural change and promote cultural pride among residents.

He further noted that more public schools, especially those previously neglected, will now receive significant attention and resources. This is made possible by the Soludo administration’s successful clearance of inherited counterpart financing arrears up to 2024, allowing the state to attract and utilize matching funds from development partners.

Also, as part of its strategy to improve road discipline and ensure public safety, the government plans to train and retrain drivers operating in the state. Following the training, drivers found guilty of committing major traffic violations will be blacklisted to deter reckless behaviour and promote responsible driving.

Dr. Mefor reiterated the state government’s commitment to driving sustainable development, ensuring safety, and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens through strategic investments and reforms.
