Gilbert Deya, a well-known Kenyan televangelist who claimed to facilitate “miracle” pregnancies, has died in a road accident near Kisumu town in western Kenya. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Deya’s vehicle collided with a university bus and another vehicle, resulting in his death at the scene. At least 30 people were injured in the accident, including Deya’s wife and 15 students from the university bus.
Deya’s claims of creating miraculous pregnancies through prayer had sparked controversy and investigation into alleged child trafficking. He was arrested and extradited from the UK about eight years ago after a decade-long legal battle. Although he was acquitted of the charges two years ago due to insufficient evidence, the allegations had significantly tarnished his reputation.
Siaya County Governor James Orengo expressed his condolences, stating, “I have learnt with deep sorrow and regret of the passing on of Bishop Gilbert Deya.” Orengo confirmed that the horrific road accident involved a vehicle belonging to the county.
Deya’s ministry had gained significant attention in the early 2000s, with many couples seeking his help to conceive. However, investigations revealed that his church was allegedly linked to a child trafficking ring, leading to his arrest and subsequent legal battles.
The circumstances surrounding Deya’s death are still under investigation, and the impact of his passing on his followers and the community remains to be seen. As news of his death spreads, many are left to reflect on the complex legacy of a man who claimed to possess divine powers.
