A coalition of prominent opposition figures under the banner of the Nigeria National Coalition Group (NNCG) has officially adopted the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) as its political platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

In a strategic move aimed at fostering unity and fresh beginnings, the NNCG has formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of ADA as a political party. The application, dated June 19, 2025, was addressed to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and was co-signed by Chief Akin Ricketts, Protem National Chairman of ADA, and Abdullahi Musa Elayo, the Protem National Secretary.

The letter, which was stamped and acknowledged by the INEC chairman’s office on June 20, was titled “Application for Registration as a Political Party.” It outlined the coalition’s decision to transform the ADA into a full-fledged political party, with the name “All Democratic Alliance,” the acronym “ADA,” and the slogan “Justice for All.”

In their application, the group stated: “We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party. This is sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.”

The application included relevant documents as required by electoral laws. These attachments included the party’s flag, logo, manifesto, constitution, and minutes of meetings held by its leadership. The letter emphasized the legal basis for the request, citing Section 40 and 222 of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 75 of the Electoral Act (2022).

The ADA’s logo, according to the document, incorporates symbolic colours and features an image of maize (corn) — reflecting the party’s vision and core values. The party also submitted its constitution, which defines its ideological framework, internal structure, organizational guidelines, and guiding democratic principles.

The coalition stated: “We have further attached our manifesto encompassing details of our party ideology, and our constitution providing the legal framework that defines our identity, structures and organization, regulates our affairs and guides our actions…”

While expressing hope for a positive response, the letter concluded with: “While we eagerly await further action from the commission on the next step forward towards attaining our desired goal, please accept the consideration of our highest respect.”

Notable political figures involved in the coalition include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Senate President David Mark, and Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats.

Initially, the coalition had considered merging with existing political parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). However, after extensive consultations, concerns emerged over the internal conflicts and legal battles within these parties.

Consequently, the coalition established a special committee to explore the formation of a new party. The consensus was to launch a fresh platform where all members would begin on equal footing, free from the entrenched interests and disputes of older parties.

With the registration process now initiated, the All Democratic Alliance seeks to position itself as a credible alternative for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
