A deadly suicide bombing late Friday night shattered the calm of Konduga Local Government Area in Borno State, when an attacker detonated an explosive at a crowded food joint, killing more than ten people and leaving several others critically injured.

The blast, which occurred around 10:00 p.m., caused widespread panic among residents. The targeted spot, a popular roadside food outlet, was teeming with activity at the time, frequented by both locals and travelers. The powerful explosion sent shockwaves through the community, claiming lives on the spot and throwing others into chaos.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment with anguish. “We were just eating and chatting when the bomb went off. It was sudden and terrifying,” one resident recounted. “Bodies were scattered, and the bomber’s remains were completely disfigured by the blast.” The attacker is believed to have died on the spot, with body parts burnt beyond recognition.

The Borno State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the tragic incident on Saturday. “At about 22:00 hours yesterday, an unidentified person entered a crowded area in Konduga and detonated an explosive device, killing over ten individuals,” he stated. He added that an investigation is already underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those behind it.

Reacting to the incident, Vice President Kashim Shettima condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a vile and cowardly act of terrorism targeted at innocent civilians. Speaking on Saturday, he expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Borno State.

“The Federal Government will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice,” Shettima vowed. “This senseless violence will not break our resolve. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, and we will ensure they receive all necessary assistance in this time of grief.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in Borno and across the entire Northeast region. “Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we remain steadfast in our mission to dismantle the remnants of terror groups and prevent such tragic events from recurring. The enemies of peace will not derail the progress we have made in curbing insecurity.”

As investigations continue, security agencies have been urged to intensify efforts to track down the masterminds of the attack, while humanitarian support is being mobilized for the affected families.
