The Russian government has strongly condemned the US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, labeling the action as “irresponsible” and a “gross violation of international laws”. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that the US strikes have led to a “dangerous escalation” and are fraught with further undermining of regional and global security. This stance reflects Russia’s concerns about the potential consequences of the US action and its impact on the Middle East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has no current plans to speak with US President Donald Trump about the situation, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. However, Peskov added that a call could be arranged swiftly if needed. This cautious approach suggests that Russia is carefully considering its next steps in response to the escalating conflict.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned the US action, stating that the US crossed a “very big red line” by attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities. Araghchi emphasized that Iran will continue to defend itself “by all means necessary” against US military aggression. He also criticized the US for sabotaging diplomatic efforts, saying, “This week, we held talks with the E3/EU when the US decided to blow up that diplomacy”.

Araghchi’s upcoming visit to Moscow for talks with President Putin underscores the close relationship between Russia and Iran. During his visit, Araghchi is expected to hold serious consultations with Putin on the recent US airstrikes and potential diplomatic responses. Iran’s Foreign Minister has made it clear that any demand to return to negotiations is “irrelevant”, given the US actions. “The world must not forget that it was the United States which — in the midst of a process to forge a diplomatic outcome — betrayed diplomacy by supporting the genocidal Israeli regime’s launch of an illegal war of aggression on the Iranian nation,” Araghchi said.

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s strong words reflect the country’s determination to stand firm in the face of US aggression. Araghchi’s visit to Moscow is likely to focus on coordinating Russia and Iran’s positions on the conflict, with a view to finding a diplomatic solution that addresses the concerns of both countries.
