Joint security forces in Benue State have made significant progress in response to the recent wave of violence that rocked the Yelwata area of Guma Local Government Area.

At a press briefing held on Sunday, June 22, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, announced the arrest of several individuals suspected to be involved in the deadly attacks that claimed numerous lives and displaced thousands.

Although the identities of the arrested suspects were not disclosed, Commissioner Emenari emphasized that the breakthrough was made possible due to the unwavering support from Governor Hyacinth Alia and the swift intervention directed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

He confirmed that additional personnel have now been deployed across vulnerable rural communities to reinforce security and deter further attacks.

In a stern advisory to the public, Emenari urged landlords, hotel operators, and residents to be vigilant and thoroughly screen tenants and guests in order to prevent criminal elements from gaining a foothold within their communities.

The recent violence in Benue, reportedly carried out by suspected herdsmen, has resulted in one of the bloodiest episodes in the state’s recent history.

Yelwata and surrounding communities came under coordinated assault last week, leading to over 200 deaths and the displacement of hundreds of families. Survivors have recounted the horror of the attacks, describing them as among the most vicious atrocities the region has witnessed in years.

Amid mounting public outcry and a national atmosphere of mourning, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid a condolence visit to Benue State. His visit, seen as a move to demonstrate federal solidarity, comes in response to calls for stronger governmental action against rising insecurity across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

During his visit, President Tinubu reassured the people of Benue of his administration’s firm commitment to restoring peace, securing lives and property, and ensuring justice for all victims of the senseless violence.

He vowed that the federal government would not rest until normalcy is returned and those responsible are held accountable.
