Ibadan was abuzz on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, as leading personalities from across politics, culture, education, and traditional life gathered at the Emeritus Prof. Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall to witness the official launch of Know Oyo State, authored by Prince Dotun Oyelade. The book—described as an encyclopaedic compendium covering the state’s geography, history, institutions, and developmental milestones—marks a significant intellectual milestone for Oyo State.

The Chief Host, Governor Seyi Makinde, delivered a warm and reflective keynote address. He praised Oyelade’s passion for Oyo’s legacy, and invited the audience to embrace the book as a functional resource for state-building.

“Dotun has given us a tool not only to inform but to inspire. Know Oyo State will serve educators, policy planners, and even political observers well,” he said.

Highlighting Oyelade’s integrity and depth, Makinde recounted how he personally persuaded the veteran broadcaster to join his campaign circle in 2018—a testament to the Commissioner’s principled character.

Makinde’s invitation list brought together high-profile guests, affirming the event’s grandeur:

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade

Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afọlábí Oladunni Ọláoyè, Orumógege III

Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba (Dr.) Francis Olushola Alao, among other Royalties.

Chief (Mrs.) Mutiat Ladoja, wife of former governor Rashidi Ladoja

Chief Zacchaeus Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, present as a Special Guest.

Alhaji Ahmed Raji SAN, Baba Adinni of Oke-Ogun, attended as a Spiritual Patron.

Maj. Gen. Oladayo Popoola, former military governor, served as Special Guests of Honour and Other highly honoured dignitaries.

Traditional authority was strongly represented. The presence of Alaafin’s emissary and various local monarchs detailed their endorsement of the book’s celebration of Oyo’s cultural identity. Their presence highlighted the book’s role in preserving Yoruba heritage.

The event featured readings from key chapters, highlighting Oyelade’s blend of narrative storytelling and rich documentation. A short documentary showcased Oyo’s transformation under Governor Makinde, particularly in infrastructure, education, and digital engagement.

Academics praised the book for its thoroughness. Remarks from Dr. Ayo Adeseun, former senator, commended the depth of research and data-driven analysis—identifying it as essential content beyond a mere promotional piece, but rather a scholarly resource with policy implications.

Oyelade announced a strategic distribution plan in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Copies of Know Oyo State will be provided to secondary schools, public libraries, and community learning centres, ensuring its integration into civic education curricula.

“Our young people must understand that Oyo is not just a point on the Nigerian map; it is a story, a system, a heritage,” Oyelade asserted.

Prince Dotun Oyelade, a seasoned broadcaster and current Commissioner for Information, has spent over 45 years in media and public service, shaping the state’s communication landscape. He previously celebrated his 70th birthday with the launch of Dotun Oyelade Reporting: Memoirs of a Newshound, a reflection of his legacy in journalism and mentorship.

The launch of Know Oyo State has set a high bar for similar works—combining historical preservation with forward-facing policy perspective. With Governor Makinde’s endorsement, high-calibre guest attendance, and plans for educational rollout, the book is poised to become an essential reference and civic tool in Oyo State and beyond.
