The Lagos State Government has disclosed plans to intensify regulatory oversight on the growing number of unqualified individuals operating in the field of aesthetic medicine and skincare.

This was revealed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, during the 19th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD).

Professor Abayomi expressed deep concern over the increasing number of self-proclaimed skincare experts offering aesthetic dermatological procedures without appropriate qualifications.

“Aesthetic dermatology has witnessed a global surge in popularity, and Lagos is not exempt from this trend,” the Commissioner stated. “However, we are particularly disturbed by the alarming presence of untrained and unlicensed individuals presenting themselves as skincare professionals.”

He emphasized that such practitioners, often referred to as “quacks,” are administering various cosmetic and dermatological treatments that pose serious health risks to the public.

In response to this troubling development, the Lagos State Ministry of Health, through its regulatory agency—the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA)—has initiated steps to investigate and monitor this expanding phenomenon. According to Professor Abayomi, the goal is to protect residents from unprofessional practices and ensure public safety.

“We are working closely with the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists, who are the recognized experts in this field, to set professional boundaries and define clear regulations. By doing so, we aim to place all activities related to aesthetic dermatology under strict governmental scrutiny,” he added.

The Commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to public health, stating that all efforts would be made to ensure that only certified professionals are allowed to operate within the sensitive domain of skincare and aesthetic treatments in the state.
