Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira has announced that his team will adopt an aggressive approach in their upcoming quarterfinal match against Chelsea in the Club World Cup.

Ferreira emphasized the importance of physicality and not giving Chelsea room to control possession. The match is scheduled to take place on July 4 at Lincoln Financial Field.

According to Ferreira, Palmeiras will focus on blocking Chelsea’s attacks when they’re winning and being more aggressive when they’re losing. “If we are winning, what we need to do to block them. If we are losing, what we need to do to be more aggressive,” he said in an interview with Sportsmen.

Ferreira also highlighted the team’s strategy of putting three players in the middle, with one number five, one number eight, and the eleven players closing in inside. The striker will be positioned in half space, while the wingers follow the fullbacks and support the team’s strength in the middle.

Ferreira emphasized the need for his team to be proactive and not give Chelsea space to operate. “We let our striker not in front but in half space, in left half space. And the others, my wingers, follow the fullbacks and we support with all our strength in the middle because the opponent will cross for sure,” he explained.

Ferreira also stressed the importance of teamwork and extra effort from all players. “So extra effort that we need and we need to suffer together and I speak with them many times,” he added.

This matchup between Chelsea and Palmeiras is notable, given their previous encounter in the 2021 Club World Cup final, where Chelsea emerged victorious with a 2-1 win. The Blues will look to replicate their success, while Palmeiras aims to cause an upset and progress to the semifinals.

Chelsea has shown impressive form in the tournament, securing a 4-1 win over Benfica in the round of 16. Meanwhile, Palmeiras edged past Botafogo 1-0 in extra time, with Paulinho scoring the decisive goal in the 100th minute.
