Nigerian content creator and street-style interviewer, Kuye Adegoke — famously known as Egungun of Lagos — is facing a wave of online criticism after a birthday message he posted for his wife stirred controversy across social media platforms on Tuesday, July 2, 2025.

The media personality, known for his bold fashion features and viral “no be juju be that” interviews with Lagos street fashionistas, marked his wife’s birthday with an Instagram post that many considered offensive, tone-deaf, and disrespectful.

In the birthday tribute, Egungun posted a photo of his wife with the caption:

“Happy birthday to my wife. If no be say I meet you early, I for don matchmake you give one guy wey go pay me well. But thank God I cash out forever .”

While the message was likely intended to be humorous, the remark about matchmaking and “cashing out” quickly drew backlash, with many describing it as objectifying and inappropriate — especially in a post meant to celebrate a spouse.

The post went viral within hours, with fans and critics alike taking to X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok to express their disapproval. Some accused the influencer of reducing his wife to a commodity, while others questioned whether the post reflected deeper issues of respect in their marriage.

One Twitter user wrote:

“Imagine posting your wife’s birthday and calling her your meal ticket. Clown behavior.”

Another user commented:

“Egungun of Lagos just showed us he sees women as deals, not partners.”

While a few fans defended the post as playful banter between a husband and wife who understand each other’s humor, the overwhelming majority found the joke distasteful and insensitive — particularly in today’s digital culture that increasingly values emotional intelligence and gender sensitivity.

Amid the backlash, Egungun of Lagos returned to his Instagram Stories to post a brief message that appeared to address the controversy. Without offering a full apology, he wrote:

“People too dey take life seriously. If my wife no vex, why una dey vex? Make una rest abeg”

That response only deepened the anger among critics, many of whom interpreted the remark as dismissive and lacking accountability.

This incident has once again sparked conversations around the line between humor and disrespect in public relationships, especially among influencers and celebrities. Social media users pointed out the responsibility that comes with being a public figure and how seemingly small statements can perpetuate damaging narratives about gender roles, respect, and partnership.

Relationship coach and social commentator, Efe Edem, told Daily Post Nigeria:

“What Egungun posted reflects a broader cultural problem—making jokes at the expense of women’s dignity. Even if it’s just ‘play,’ it reinforces the idea that women are assets to be leveraged. Public figures need to do better.”

Kuye Adegoke rose to fame through his unique street-interview series, where he explores the fashion sense of Lagosians while injecting humor and catchphrases that resonate widely, including his signature “no be juju be that.” With millions of followers across TikTok and Instagram, he is one of Nigeria’s most recognized internet personalities in the fashion and lifestyle space.
