Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move he described as a moral response to Nigeria’s worsening state of affairs.

In a personally signed statement titled “To the Good People of Kebbi and Fellow Nigerians,” released on Wednesday, Malami said his decision was the result of extensive consultations and sincere introspection.

According to him, the move was neither motivated by personal ambition nor political vengeance, but by a deep concern for the suffering masses and the country’s alarming descent into dysfunction.

“This decision is born not out of anger or ambition,” he wrote, “but out of love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily.”

He decried the current state of insecurity plaguing the country, particularly in the North, where he said violence has become a part of everyday life.

“Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism are now routine. Sadly, the government seems more interested in politics than in protecting the lives of its citizens.”

Malami also took aim at the country’s worsening economic conditions, highlighting the unbearable cost of living, skyrocketing food prices, and the increasing frustration among unemployed youth.

“Our economy is in complete disarray. Prices of essential goods have tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are vanishing. The youth are losing hope.”

According to the former minister, the fundamental principles of governance have been eroded, replaced by patronage and party loyalty.

“Governance has been abandoned. Appointments, policies, and projects are no longer driven by competence or national interest, but by political alignment. I cannot in good conscience remain part of a system that watches silently as Nigerians suffer and die.”

Malami, who hails from Kebbi State, said his choice to join the ADC aligns with a broader coalition of political actors committed to rebuilding the nation through integrity, inclusion, and purposeful leadership.

“This is why I have chosen to join the ADC — a party rooted in justice, competence, inclusivity, and national renewal. I believe that through this coalition and with the support of Nigerians, we can begin a genuine transformation of our country.”

Addressing the people of his home state, he reaffirmed his loyalty and pledged never to turn his back on them.

“To the people of Kebbi State, I remain your son and servant. I will never abandon you. This move is to amplify your voice, defend your interests, and help restore hope for a better future.”

He appealed for unity and action among Nigerians, urging them to rise beyond fear and take ownership of the country’s destiny.

“Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
