The revered Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of an extraordinary reign that spanned over six decades.
His death was confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the demise of his longtime friend and former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London at the age of 82.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State officially announced the monarch’s passing through a statement issued from Abeokuta, the state capital. The governor expressed profound grief, describing Oba Adetona’s death as a monumental loss not only to the people of Ijebuland but to Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. He further acknowledged the painful coincidence that the Awujale passed on the same day as his friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari. “It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, died in the United Kingdom,” the governor noted.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, becoming one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most influential traditional rulers. His reign was characterized by visionary leadership, cultural renaissance, and socioeconomic advancement within Ijebuland. He was widely celebrated for his wisdom, forthrightness, and his tireless efforts to promote unity, cultural pride, and development across the Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large.
