The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a three-day suspension of all political engagements across the country as a mark of respect for the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

This decision, the party explained, is part of a national mourning period declared to honour Buhari’s enduring legacy, his contributions to national unity, democratic governance, and overall national development.

In an official statement issued by the party, the Media Adviser and Chief Press Secretary to the ADC interim national chairman, Paul Mumeh, conveyed the party’s profound grief over the passing of the former Nigerian leader.

The statement also carried heartfelt tributes from the ADC interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, who described Buhari as a statesman of remarkable distinction and integrity.

Senator Mark extolled Buhari’s patriotic service, both as a soldier and as a democratically elected leader. “President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of exceptional character. As a soldier, he fought valiantly to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of our great nation. As a democratically elected President, he made significant contributions to the growth and consolidation of democracy in Nigeria,” Mark stated.

He further praised Buhari’s tenure for reflecting discipline, unwavering commitment, and a deep-rooted patriotism that endeared him to many across the country. “His leadership exemplified discipline, dedication, and a profound sense of national duty,” the ADC leader added.

The ADC, in addition to declaring a mourning period, called on the Federal Government to immortalise the late President by naming national monuments, institutions, or implementing initiatives that reflect the values he championed throughout his public service.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), under which Buhari served as President from 2015 to 2023, also announced the closure of its National Secretariat in Abuja. The temporary shutdown is part of the party’s gesture to honour Buhari’s memory and contributions to the nation.

In related developments, the Federal Government has directed 25 members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to travel to Katsina State to participate fully in the series of burial ceremonies of the late President. The officials are also expected to remain in Daura for the third-day prayer session scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Furthermore, the Special Federal Executive Council meeting initially scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, has been postponed. The meeting will now be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, to allow government officials to participate in the burial rites and mourning activities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement issued on Monday, disclosed that he would personally travel to Katsina to receive the body of former President Buhari when Vice President Kashim Shettima returns with it from London. From there, President Tinubu will accompany the body to Daura, Buhari’s hometown, for the funeral proceedings.

This period of national mourning reflects the wide-reaching impact of Buhari’s life and service to Nigeria, as leaders across political divides and institutions continue to honour his memory.
