Nigeria is set to field the largest delegation at the upcoming 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from July 16 to 20 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, iReport247News reports.

According to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), a total of 937 athletes and officials from 43 countries have confirmed participation in the five-day continental event, which will be held at the newly refurbished MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

Host nation Nigeria will present a squad of 110 athletes—comprising 60 men and 50 women—alongside 22 officials. The Nigerian delegation is the largest at the championship, closely followed by South Africa with a 100-member team. Other strong contenders like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Algeria will also be in attendance with sizeable contingents.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has assured that preparations are in full gear across key areas including logistics, accommodation, and transportation to ensure a smooth and successful hosting.

“All hands are on deck to deliver a world-class championship,” an NSC official said, highlighting the significance of the event for youth sports development in Africa.

Sanctioned by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), the championship will also draw participation from countries such as Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, and Uganda, among others.

This competition marks another major sporting milestone for Abeokuta, just two months after it hosted the 2024 National Sports Festival, which brought together over 15,000 athletes and officials.

Ogun State officials say the successful execution of the National Sports Festival has boosted the city’s capacity and confidence to host continental events of this magnitude.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is optimistic that competing on home soil will provide an edge for Team Nigeria, with hopes high for a strong medal haul.

“This championship is not just about winning medals. It’s also about talent discovery and giving our young athletes the exposure they need to grow into global stars,” an AFN representative noted.

The tournament will also coincide with the CAA Congress, making it a pivotal moment for athletics development in the region.

With scouts, coaches, and talent spotters expected to attend, the championships will serve as a showcase for Africa’s emerging generation of sprinters, jumpers, throwers, and middle-distance runners—many of whom are eyeing the world stage in years to come.
