Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police Service.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 2021 and 2022 and involve three women. Two counts of rape relate to one woman, three counts to a second, while the sexual assault charge involves a third woman.

The 32-year-old Ghanaian international, who recently parted ways with Arsenal after the expiration of his contract, is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5 August.

In a statement, Det Supt Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said:

“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.

We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.”

The investigation began in February 2022, when the Met Police first received a report of rape. Partey has reportedly cooperated with the authorities throughout the process.

His legal representative, Jenny Wiltshire, issued a statement maintaining Partey’s innocence:

“Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation.

He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.

Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”

Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 for £45.3 million. During his time at the club, he made 130 Premier League appearances, scored nine goals, and featured prominently in both the domestic and European campaigns. He also played a key role in Arsenal’s run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals last season.

Internationally, Partey has earned over 50 caps for Ghana, most recently featuring in the country’s World Cup qualifiers in March.

The Ghana international made 35 Premier League appearances last season, scoring four goals as the north London club finished second in the Premier League.

He also made 12 appearances during Arsenal’s run to the semifinals of the Champions League before they were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.
