The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has extended his heartfelt condolences—on behalf of CAF and its 54 Member Associations—to the family of the late Peter Rufai, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the entire Nigerian football fraternity, following the passing of the former Super Eagles captain and legendary goalkeeper.

Peter Rufai, affectionately known as ‘Dodo Mayana’, died in Lagos on Thursday, 3rd of July 2025 after a brief illness at the age of 61.

A revered figure in African football, Rufai made a lasting impact on the game with his exemplary leadership goalkeeping heroics and performances for Nigeria on the international stage.

Rufai during his stellar career earned over 60 caps for the Super Eagles and was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at two FIFA World Cup tournaments—in 1994 and 1998. He was also instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia, where he played a crucial role in the team’s success.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), its President Ibrahim Gusau, his former teammates, and the people of Nigeria. ‘Dodo Mayana’ will always live in our hearts. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
