Nine-time champions Nigeria left it late to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Botswana, booking their place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in underwhelming fashion.

It was far from a vintage performance by the Super Falcons, who once again struggled to find their rhythm despite a star-studded lineup. Much like their 3-0 win against Tunisia in the group opener, the display was patchy, and the finishing wasteful.

Nigeria dominated possession but were repeatedly frustrated by a well-organised Botswana defence and the heroics of their goalkeeper, who pulled off several impressive saves to keep the scores level.

The breakthrough finally came just two minutes from time, when substitute striker Chinwendu Ihezuo latched onto a cross and tapped home the decisive goal from close range. The Mexico-based forward who plays for Pachuca has now scored in back-to-back games off the bench, earning her the nickname “Super Sub.”

Speaking after the match, Falcons coach Justine Madugu acknowledged the lack of cutting edge:

“We got the job done, but we need to be more clinical. Credit to Botswana—they defended very well and made life difficult for us.”

Despite the win, the Super Falcons’ wastefulness in front of goal and lack of cutting edge remain a concern as they head into the knockout rounds. They’ll need to significantly raise their game if they hope to achieve their ambition of winning a record-extending 10th continental title.

Nevertheless, the victory sees Nigeria maintain a perfect record in Group B, with maximum six points from two matches—marking Nigeria’s first time winning their opening two group games at WAFCON since 2014. Meanwhile, Algeria sit second with four points following their goalless draw earlier in the day with Tunisia, who are third on one point. Botswana remain bottom without a point.

Nigeria will wrap up their group-stage campaign against Algeria on Sunday, needing at least a draw to finish as group winners and carry momentum into the quarterfinals.
