Liverpool Football Club has announced the permanent retirement of the number 20 shirt worn by Diogo Jota, following his tragic passing in a car accident alongside his brother, André Silva, earlier this month.

The decision, described as “unprecedented” in the club’s 132-year history, was made in consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, and will serve as a lasting tribute to a player beloved by teammates, fans, and staff alike.

In a heartfelt statement released on Friday, the club said:

“Diogo wore the number 20 with pride and distinction, helping lead us to many victories. Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20.”

A Tribute Across All Levels

Liverpool confirmed that the number 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the club, including Liverpool Women and the Academy, marking the first time such an honour has been bestowed on any player in the club’s storied history.

“This is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person,” the statement added.

‘Making the Number Eternal’ – Edwards

Michael Edwards, FSG’s CEO of Football, underscored the emotional weight of the decision and the importance of involving Jota’s family in the process:

“As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way,” Edwards said. “It was vitally important to involve Rute and Diogo’s family in the decision, and to ensure they were the first to know our intention.”

“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020, quickly became a fan favourite, known not only for his consistent goal-scoring and versatility in attack but also for his humility, warmth, and character.

“Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore it with honour, distinction and affection,” Edwards added.

Ownership Pays Tribute

In a joint statement, Liverpool’s owners — Billy Hogan, John Henry, Tom Werner, and Mike Gordon — expressed the club’s deep sorrow and admiration:

“The fact that, in the long and storied history of our club, this honour has never previously been bestowed shows the significance of Diogo to Liverpool Football Club.”

“His memory and contribution will be immortalised by his association with the number 20.”

They extended their sympathies to Jota’s grieving family:

“Our love goes to Rute, his three beautiful children, and his wider family as they continue to navigate the pain of this unimaginable loss.”

A Legacy Beyond the Pitch

The club emphasized that the decision to retire Jota’s number extends beyond his on-field achievements — it is a gesture of recognition for the lasting emotional bond he formed with the Liverpool community.

“This is not just about a number on a shirt,” the club said. “It’s about what Diogo represented — commitment, humility, excellence, and unity.”

“Diogo Jota. Our lad from Portugal. Forever our number 20.”
